Start Groups

Due to the narrow trails and the large participant numbers, it is essential that each runner starts in an appropriate start group. This reduces congestion on the course and makes for a more enjoyable and safer race for everyone.

Why is there a start group seeding process?

During the online entry process you will select an option for start group seeding and you will also request a start group which suits your ability. This information will be used to assign you to an appropriate start group.

OPTIONS FOR START GROUP SEEDING

You will have the following options for start group seeding:

1. USING ITRA PERFORMANCE INDEX RATINGS

The International Trail Running Association (ITRA) has a ranking system for runners. If you have completed an ITRA registered trail running race in the previous 36 months, you will have earned an ITRA Performance Index Rating and you may select the option ‘Using ITRA performance index ratings’ during online entry. Most major international and Australian trail running races including all Ultra-Trail World Tour events are registered with ITRA.

You will need to list your General ITRA Performance Index Rating during online entry. Use your General ITRA Performance Index Rating and the 'Start Group Times' table below to help you choose a suitable start group request.

To check if you have completed an ITRA registered race and to check your General ITRA Performance Index Rating, go to the ITRA website. Type in your name and select your nationality. If a profile comes up for you, you will have an ITRA Performance Index Rating as long as your last race result was within the past 36 months. Check you only have one ITRA profile. If your year of birth or nationality was incorrect or your name was spelt differently in any previous run, you may have more than one ITRA profile. It is important to get multiple ITRA profiles / incorrect profiles combined into one that matches your exact name, nationality and year of birth in your Ultra-Trail Australia entry. To do this, you can sign up for a free ITRA account and then link your multiple ITRA profiles to your ITRA account. Refer to How to amend incorrect or multiple ITRA profiles. As ITRA Performance Index Ratings provide the most reliable, repeatable and simplest method to rank runners, it is the preferred method for start group seeding. Any trail running event can register with ITRA. If a trail run you have completed, or would like to compete in for your start group seeding is not registered with ITRA, please email that race director the following documents which explain how to register a trail running race with ITRA and the benefits of doing so. 2. RESULT IN A ROAD MARATHON OR HALF-MARATHON

If you have a race result in any official 42.2km road marathon, 21.1km road half-marathon or 42.2km Ironman marathon run leg (must list only your time for the run leg) from the past three years, you may select the option 'Result in a road marathon or half-marathon'.

You will need to list the name of the race and provide a url directly to your online result certificate or directly to your result on the relevant official event website results page. Refer to the 'Guideline to Estimate Suitable UTA50 Start Group from Half-Marathon, Marathon and Ironman Run Leg Results' table below to help you choose a suitable start group request. Note that trail running results (ITRA Performance Index Ratings) are given a higher statistical importance than marathon or half marathon results and therefore generally translate to a slightly higher start group seeding for a given runner. Marathon and half marathon times are, however, highly useful for start group seeding if you have no other result.

You need to check that your full name in the official results is spelt identically to that used in your Ultra-Trail Australia entry. If not, our automated scrutinising system will miss your result(s). So if you have a different name (e.g. maiden name, nickname) or misspelled your name in a past result, you need to alert us during the online entry process.

3. MEMBER OF SQUADRUN TRAINING GROUP

If you become a member of the SQUADRUN training group from at least mid January until at least 15th March and you don't have a suitable other option from the above, you may select the option 'Member of SQUADRUN training group'. If you have been a member of SQUADRUN, preferably from when entries open but at least from mid January, the SQUADRUN coaches will have excellent knowledge of your trail running abilities and speed and will be able to seed you into an appropriate start group by March 15th. Refer to SQUADRUN for information. THIS IS BY FAR THE SIMPLEST OPTION IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED A RACE BEFORE.

4. NO SEEDING

It is fine if you do not have any of the above three options; just select 'No Seeding' and you will simply be assigned to the last start group after 15th March. You should also select this option if you have none of the above three options when you enter but are planning on completing one of the other options by 15th March. You should make sure you log back into your entry by 15th March and input your new information. If you have not provided another start group seeding option / relevant result by 15th March, you will be assigned to the last start group.

You do not need to provide a previous race result if you request to start in the last start group.

START GROUP REQUEST

In the online entry process, you will then need to request to start in one of seven start groups. Base your choice of requested start group on your start group seeding option / listed result and be realistic in your choice. Race organisers will check your start group seeding option / listed result, scrutinise your start group request based upon your information and will either approve your requested start group or re-allocate you to a lower start group. If you have an ITRA Performance Index Rating, use the 'Start Group Times' table below and your General ITRA Performance Index Rating to help you choose a suitable start group request. If you have selected to use a Marathon or Half-Marathon result, use the 'Guideline to Estimate Suitable UTA50 Start Group from Half-Marathon, Marathon and Ironman Run Leg Results' table above to help you choose a suitable start group request. If you have chosen 'Member of SQUADRUN Training Group', the coaches will be able to assist you to request an appropriate start group by 15th March.

If you wish to start in the same start group as your friends, you should all request the same start group which suits the slowest friend’s start group seeding option / listed result.

AMENDING YOUR START GROUP SEEDING OPTION AND START GROUP REQUEST ONLINE

You can amend your start group seeding option and start group request by logging back into your entry via the ‘User Profile’ button. You will not be able to amend the details of your chosen start group seeding option online or your start group request after 11:59pm 15th March, 2019. If you chose ‘No Seeding', you have until 11:59pm 15th March, 2019 to provide another start group seeding option / relevant result. If you still have 'No Seeding' selected at 11:59pm 15th March, 2019, you will be assigned to the last start group.

START GROUP ALLOCATION

Commencing 16th March, race organisers will scrutinise all listed results and assign runners to an appropriate start group. Great care is taken to ensure that this process is accurate and fair. By 2nd April a finalised list of allocated start groups will be posted on the Runner List page. Your allocated start group will also be printed on your race number. All decisions are final. All standard entry transfers and late entry transfers will also be allocated a suitable start group based upon the same start group seeding options.

Note that Start Groups 6 and 7 may be combined into one large start group with a start time of 8:02am. This will be done if there are a substantial number of runners (over 500) who have not provided a start group seeding option / relevant result.

You must start in your allocated start group on race day as shown on your race number or you will be automatically disqualified by the timing system. Your race time is based upon the start time of your specific start group.
