From The North Face 100 to Ultra-Trail Australia!

16 Sep 2015

In August 2015, AROC Sport announced the launch of Ultra-Trail Australia; a five-day trail running festival of unprecedented scope. Previously branded as The North Face 100 and The North Face 50, the existing 100km and 50km events, already established as the southern hemisphere’s largest trail races, are now subsumed under the Ultra-Trail Australia® brand.

From May 11 – May 16, 2016, Katoomba, NSW, will play host to over 4000 athletes, spectators and support crew, converging for a five-day trail running extravaganza. Underpinned by the flagship 100km and 50km events, 2016 sees the addition of a 22km trail half marathon and a 2.5km dash through Katoomba town centre. Furthermore, the festival expo will feature a significantly expanded and diverse offering of product exhibitors, gear demonstrations, nutrition workshops, film screenings, athlete forums and key note presentations.

Since the inaugural 2008 edition Ultra Trail Australia has experienced meteoric growth in participation numbers. Its status as Australia’s premier trail ultra-marathon was confirmed in 2014 with invitation to join Ultra-Trail World Tour® as part of a prestigious group of iconic international events. The recent rebranding builds upon this distinction. The 2016 event will feature a start list abounding with international trail running professionals, all vying for valuable world tour points.

The course itself was selected after a rigorous and exhaustive survey of the entire nation. It showcases the lush rainforests, ethereal waterfalls, vast tablelands, stunning rock formations and breath-taking views of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. It is truly beautiful.

Harnessing massive community support and countless volunteers, Ultra-Trail Australia® epitomises the self-giving spirit of Australia and its people. The event is renowned for unfailing camaraderie amongst athletes and helpers alike. In striving for an all-inclusive approach, a generous 27 hour cut-off in the 100km event caters to the full spectrum of athletic capability, whilst children too have the opportunity to participate in a 1km-4-Kids race held at the culmination of the festival.

With the most recent edition enticing hundreds of international participants from over 25 different nations, AROC Sport are delighted by the continual evolution of this now global event. Attracting record numbers of athletes and helpers over distances previously considered to be far beyond the reach of most, Ultra-Trail Australia stands as a celebration of our pristine wilderness and the unlimited potential of the human spirt.
